Troubleshooting / symptom checklist
Machine Party black screen fix
Find out whether the whole game fails to render, the window is blank while audio continues, or only a Local-mode intro is missing. Then choose the smallest useful graphics check.
The developers added a separate Direct3D 12 launch option in v1.5 for graphical problems while recommending normal launch first. Close the game before comparing them. For a missing Local Original intro, update first: the v2.1.2 notes identify a specific cutscene fix.
Identify where the black screen starts
Note whether the main menu ever appears, whether you hear audio, and whether the window still responds. A black screen with sound is an observation, not proof that one particular driver or renderer is at fault. Do not leave a permanently unresponsive process running while changing settings elsewhere.
If the game closes to the desktop, use the crash and Vulkan checklist as well. If a Local lobby and later rounds display normally but an opening scene is missing, start with the intro-specific section below rather than treating the entire installation as unable to render.
For couch play on a TV, compare the same launch on the PC monitor if one is already available. Keep player count and launch mode unchanged during that comparison so you can tell whether the problem follows the display.
Compare the official launch options
- Close Machine Party completely and return to its Steam Library page.
- Remove any unofficial launch flags you previously added, keeping a note of them if you need to restore your own configuration.
- Launch using the normal option first. Record whether the menu appears and whether the black screen begins before or after it.
- If the display still fails, close the game and select the separate Direct3D 12 option offered by Steam. Compare the same menu or scene.
- Keep the working option. If neither improves the result, return to your baseline and continue with file and driver checks.
The official v1.5 recommendation is a troubleshooting alternative, not a guarantee that Direct3D 12 is faster or compatible with every setup. Use the actual Steam launch choice rather than copying renderer commands from an unrelated game. This Windows comparison does not establish a Linux or Steam Deck fix.
Black screen only in the Local Original intro
The August 14 v2.1.2 hotfix specifically addressed the vessel-insertion intro cutscene failing to play in Original while using Local mode. Let Steam complete updates before reproducing that exact symptom.
If the problem persists, note whether it affects only that scene or also the menu and simulations. Comparing a different Local mode can help identify an intro-only failure, but skipping a scene is a diagnostic check rather than a confirmed repair.
Include the Local mode, game version, renderer, and whether the session reaches the lobby or first trial in a report. The historical intro fix should not be presented as a universal explanation for black screens at startup.
Verify files and check the active GPU
In Steam, open Machine Party → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Valve’s verification procedure is useful after an interrupted update or when files may be missing. Finish verification before another renderer comparison; do not run several repair tools at the same time.
Install a stable driver from the manufacturer of the GPU running the game, then restart before retesting. On a laptop with two GPUs, check Windows Graphics settings for the game executable and compare using the high-performance GPU. On a desktop, check that the display cable is connected to the intended graphics output.
The Steam Windows minimum still lists Vulkan support. The presence of an alternate launch option does not erase the published hardware requirements or establish support for a system below them. The Vulkan guide keeps the full requirements and crash checks in one place.
Black screen with audio or after switching displays
If the game is responsive, try its windowed display setting when accessible. You can also test Alt + Enter once; this shortcut is a general display check and may not change the game’s mode on every configuration. If it does nothing, move on rather than repeating it indefinitely.
Disable nonessential recording overlays and graphics injectors one at a time, closing the game between tests. Compare the same scene after each change. If an overlay is the difference, restore unrelated settings and keep the report focused on that conflict.
For a new couch setup, make the display work with a simple one-controller menu test before reconnecting every controller. Once the image is stable, return to the local co-op setup hub and rebuild the intended party.
If neither renderer fixes the black screen
Report the OS, game version, GPU model, driver version, selected launch option, display connection, and the first scene that fails. State whether audio continues and whether normal and Direct3D 12 behave differently. A short description of those two results is more useful than “tried everything.”
Use the pinned bug-report thread in the game’s Steam discussions. Do not download replacement system DLLs or delete save folders based on unrelated launch advice. This checklist does not require changing saves.
Is Direct3D 12 the default recommended option?
No. The developer recommends normal launch first and offers the second option for graphical problems.
Should I reinstall immediately?
Verify files and compare the launch options first. Those checks are narrower and preserve a clearer record of what changed.
The official Steam announcements document the v1.5 renderer advice and v2.1.2 intro fix. Hardware requirements come from the Steam store; file verification follows Valve’s support procedure. Display, driver, and overlay comparisons are general troubleshooting advice, not guaranteed game-specific repairs.
